Wavegrinder WINS!
"I have been experimenting with the Wavegrinder 9.25" for a few months now in a new Mal. I decided to try it out in the recent Spring Festival held by Southside Malibu Club at Cronulla. A great result winning the over 55's, so I am very pleased with the Wavegrinder and would recommend trying it.Bill Morris - Australian champ - old mals, Golden Breed Team Rider
Waveginder Fins. The ultimate longboard fin! Just $77.00 and Thrusters now available at just $33.00 per fin. We are the exclusive Australian distributor for this product (trade enquiries welcome)
Combining NASA-proven winglet technology with sailing’s America’s
Cup-proven hydrodynamics principles, the WavegrinderTM surfboard fin
(patent 7244157) helps surfers surf faster,
for longer, and catch more waves.
Existing surfboard fins use 1950s technology that has evolved little.
But the CAD-designed, USA-made Wavegrinder fin uses a proven NACA foil
combined with proven NASA winglet technology in a high-aspect-ratio,
low-sweepback angle, short-root profile fin that has a
small-surface-area shape that nonetheless creates high lift with low
drag over a wide range of angles of attack. What all this means is you
can surf better for longer, and can catch more waves.
Currently configured to fit standard center fin boxes on longboard
surfboards, design adaptations are in the works for longboard side fins,
for shortboard surfboard thruster fins, and for both windsurfers and
kiteboards. Some users report excellent results
on single-fin shortboards.
We use the word "lift" all the time, but we mean horizontal lift -- turning force or resistance to turning. We try in this design to maximize that per square inch of area. Area is important because of skin friction, and associated drag. So if you have enough turning or resistance to turning, then you can decrease the fin size, which gives payoffs like greater speed. Lots of laypeople when they hear "lift" think not in hydrodynamic terms but in terms that they think the thing is designed to rise out of the water like a hydroplane. But that's not the concept at all. Remember - the larger the fin means the more drag you have and the slower you go. Wavegrinder gives more lift for the amount of surface area. The means more straight line speed and more power in turns.

My First impressions
Had my first surf today using a Wavegrinder Fin. Absolutely awesome! I caught more waves in one session than I have had my last 3 sessions. It is far easier to catch waves with, much faster in a straight line and way faster coming out of turns. Every longboarder on Earth should have one of these fins. If your old mal is getting a bit stale, breathe some new life in to it with a Wavegrinder! Way cheaper than a new board - a blue chip investment. I loaned my board to a 60 year old mal rider and after two waves he was sold. Couldn't wait to hand over his money to me in the car park!

Unsolicited and unedited testmonial
Hi Murray,
I tried out the Wavegrinder fin today in 2ft surf (best Sydney had to offer today). It is brilliant.
I have it on a Mc Tavish 9'1" Fireball. Takeoffs are easier and turns beautifully.
I am amazed what a difference it made. Very impressive.

The following testimonial from is from Larry. He bought one Wavegrinder, had one surf with it, then immediately bought another 4 fins for his other 3 mals and his son's board too! The following is his report.
Hello Murray
I'm back from my surfing safari and after an extremely wet start it all ended ok. I had waves from less than 1 metre up to approx 2.5 metres so I guess that's a reasonable test ride without being too testing.
After testing the fin on the 3 boards I took with me the results are as follows.
The first board tested was the 9' Nameless epoxy and it appears you are correct about them. I don't think any fin without a motor is going to rescue the shortcomings of this board. The depressions you described are also starting to appear on either side of where the timber stringer would be on a fibreglass board. As I bought this board for a very cheap price I am not going to lose any sleep over it's lack of performance.
The other 2 boards were a 9'2" and a 9'4" both of which I suspect are not locally made. The fin seemed to be better on both of these with the main things I noticed being.
1. Ability to generate extra speed to get around a section in the wave face.
2. Good drive from the bottom turns.
3. Easier to catch waves.
The 9'2" board was brand new so I did not have any pre-conceived ideas about it's performance. I used it with the original fin first then changed to the Wavegrinder and was happy with the results.
The 9'4" is a board I have used many times before so I already knew what to expect from it with the original fin.
Not sure if any of this helps you to sell the Wavegrinder.
I hope those rotten bushfires have still not affected your area.
Regards
Larry

On behalf of what I hear from Billy, as he is the surfer. It's the best
thing since sliced bread. He raves about it. Wouldn't be surprised if you
do very well with these.
Cheers Jane
I received the wave grinder from you last week but didn't get a chance to try it until Sunday.
I ride a 9 foot mal. The waves where three foot fast shore breaks, from the very first wave it blew me away, The board was so responsive and ultra quick. I was in the market for a more high performance board but after installing the new fin, this board will do fine until I snap it, which I have a habit of doing. Many thanks for the fin and I will be spreading the news.
Thanks Again,
David Kirk. Queensland.
